What we supply

We own and operate a Phantom VEO4K-990S with 72 GB of internal RAM, 10 Gigabit Ethernet for fast offloading, PL and EF lens mounts, a 5-inch Atomos Shinobi monitor and a full data station. The camera and its operator travel anywhere in Australia, and insurance is included in the quoted rate.

Frame rates and sensor

The VEO4K-990S records 4K (4096 × 2160) at up to 1,000 fps and 2K (2048 × 1080) at up to roughly 1,970 fps, with much higher rates available as the resolution drops. The sensor is slightly larger than Super 35 at 27.6 × 15.6 mm, so most PL and EF cine lenses cover it cleanly. Lenses are quoted separately; our kit can include Cooke S4 primes or a Canon 17–120 mm cine zoom.

How a Phantom shoot runs

A Phantom records into RAM rather than to a card, so the operator rolls on or just after the action and then trims in and out points around the moment worth keeping. Committing the full 72 GB to a single take gives about three and a half minutes of 25 fps playback from one continuous 4K, 1,000 fps burst, and the RAM can be segmented for several shorter takes between offloads. Over 10 Gigabit Ethernet the whole buffer clears to SSD in under two minutes, and the camera can keep shooting while the previous take copies.

Format and post-production

Recording is 12-bit Phantom Cine RAW. The .cine files open directly in DaVinci Resolve with no conversion step, ready to grade or transcode to ProRes for editorial.

Lighting for high frame rates

High speeds need light: each doubling of frame rate costs roughly a stop, so 1,000 fps needs in the order of five times the light of the same shot at 25 fps. Flicker that is invisible at normal speed can ruin a slow-motion take, so we work with gaffers who have tested their fixtures for high-speed work and can test yours with the camera before the shoot.
